    Buryat Beliefs

The Kovach are a Buryat Siberian plains family, deeply steeped in tradition and ritual. Their displacement by the Greenskins is a disaster that strikes them more deeply than the mere loss of life or physical deprivation explains: they have been forced to break their traditions, to lose their connection with their ancestry. While they struggle to restore the old order or forge a new one, life perforce seems very bleak and limited. What value is there in an act not performed in accordance with the old laws?

The Buryat plainsmen of Siberia believe in a magical world, full of spirits and natural forces, which they can control or with whom they can bargain; and their magic is based on these beliefs. They have an intimate relationship with both the spirit world and their natural surroundings, and every action and every part of their lives reflects this. Their beliefs have been modified somewhat in contact with the Rus peasantry and Magyar nomads of Siberia, with their pantheon of named gods, and the beastmen packs, with their tales of Wolf and Lune. Many of these other gods and ancestors have been taken on board as part of the Buryat's community of spirit brothers; for are not all gods and great Spirits merely parts of that great family?
